  27. In the Name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful.
  28.  
  29.      Elif.  Lam.  Mim. ^1  This Book is without a doubt a Revelation sent down
  30. from the Lord of the Worlds.

  34.      Will they say, He hath forged it?  Nay, it is the truth from thy Lord
  35. that thou mayest warn a people to whom no warner hath come before thee, that
  36. haply they may be guided.
  37.  
  38.      God it is who hath created the Heavens and the Earth and all that is
  39. between them in six days; then ascended his throne.  Save Him ye have no
  40. patron, and none to plead for you.  Will ye not then reflect?
  41.  
  42.      From the Heaven to the Earth He governeth all things: hereafter shall
  43. they come up to him on a day whose length shall be a thousand of such years
  44. as ye reckon. ^2

  49.      This is He who knoweth the unseen and the seen; the Mighty, the
  50. Merciful,

  52.      Who hath made everything which he hath created most good; and began the
  53. creation of man with clay;

  55.      Then ordained his progeny from germs of life, ^3 from sorry water:

  59.      Then shaped him, and breathed of His Spirit into him, and gave you
  60. hearing and seeing and hearts: what little thanks do ye return!

  62.      And they say, "What! when we shall have lain hidden in the earth, shall
  63. we become a new creation?"
  64.  
  65.      Yea, they deny that they shall meet their Lord.
  66.  
  67.      Say: The angel of death who is charged with you shall cause you to die:
  68. then shall ye be returned to your Lord.
  69.  
  70.      Couldst thou but see when the guilty shall droop their heads before
  71. their Lord, and cry, "O our Lord! we have seen and we have heard: return us
  72. then to life: we will do that which is right.  Verily we believe firmly!"
  73.  
  74.      (Had we pleased we had certainly given to every soul its guidance.  But
  75. true shall be the word which hath gone forth from me - I will surely fill
  76. hell with Djinn and men together.)
  77.  
  78.      "Taste then the recompense of your having forgotten the meeting with
  79. this your day.  We, too, we have forgotten you: taste then an eternal
  80. punishment for that which ye have wrought."

  82.      They only believe in our signs, who, when mention is made of them, fall
  83. down in Adoration, and celebrate the praise of their Lord, and are not puffed
  84. up with disdain:
  85.  
  86.      Who, as they raise them ^1 from their couches, call on their Lord with
  87. fear and desire, and give alms of that with which we have supplied them.
  88.

  91.      No soul knoweth what joy of the eyes is reserved for the good in
  92. recompense of their works.
  93.  
  94.      Shall he then who is a believer be as he who sinneth grossly? they shall
  95. not be held alike.

  97.      As to those who believe and do that which is right, they shall have
  98. gardens of eternal abode as the meed of their works:
  99.  
  100.      But as for those who grossly sin, their abode shall be the fire: so oft
  101. as they shall desire to escape out of it, back shall they be turned into it.
  102. And it shall be said to them, Taste ye the torment of the fire, which ye
  103. treated as a lie.
  104.  
  105.      And we will surely cause them to taste a punishment yet nearer at hand,
  106. besides the greater punishment, that haply they may turn to us in penitence.
  107.  
  108.      Who acteth worse than he who is warned by the signs of his Lord, then
  109. turneth away from them?  We will surely take vengeance on the guilty ones.
  110.  
  111.      We heretofore gave the Book of the law to Moses: have thou no doubt as
  112. to our meeting with him: ^2 and we appointed it for the guidance of the
  113. children of Israel.
  114.  
  115.      And we appointed Imams from among them who should guide after our
  116. command when they had themselves endured with constancy, and had firmly
  117. believed in our signs.
  118.  
  119.      Now thy Lord!  He will decide between them on the day of resurrection as
  120. to the subject of their disputes.
  121.  
  122.      Is it not notorious to them how many generations, through whose abodes
  123. they walk, we have destroyed before them?  Truly herein are signs: will they
  124. not then hear?
  125.  
  126.      See they not how we drive the rain to some parched land and thereby
  127. bring forth corn of which their cattle and themselves do eat?  Will they not
  128. then behold?
  129.  
  130.      They say, "When will this decision take place?  Tell us, if ye are men
  131. of truth?"
  132.  
  133.      Say: On the day of that decision, the faith of infidels shall not avail
  134. them, and they shall have no further respite.
